Our design floods the house with sun light in the winter and, through shading devices, blocks out all direct sunlight in the summer. The winter sun will fall onto a concrete slab which will heat the interior during the day, slowly releasing the heat at night. All roof water will be captured in rainwater tanks. An array of photovoltaic and solar panels will be incorporated on the north facing roof. Operable external doors and louvre windows will be placed to allow cross ventilation - reducing the need for air-conditioning in the summer months. In a suburban area where project homes are common and theoretically cheaper to build our aim is to design an environmentally sustainable building - specifically for this site - which will have very limited running costs.
